The reading strategy from the article by Ellen C. Carillo "A Writer's Guide to Mindful Reading" that I have used before is: Skimming.
I find skimming very useful when I want to answer English Language Reading and Comprehension tests.
It is important to note that Carillo did offer new ways to think about the strategies that I already use. For example, he recommends that while skimming, it is important to annotate a work by recognizing and marking the parts in the following list (some of which need previewing because the techniques are closely connected) as they occur in the text
None of the reading strategies were unfamiliar. Of course, they are all worth relearning.
It is to be noted that skimming is best used with nonfiction (or factual) content and refers to seeking solely the basic or key themes. Because you don't read everything when you skim, your overall knowledge suffers. You only read what is relevant to your goal.
What are reading strategies?Reading techniques is a wide phrase that refers to the deliberate and explicit acts that assist readers in translating print to meaning. Strategies for improving decoding and reading comprehension assist all students, but they are especially important for readers who are just beginning, and readers who are struggling.

In the book "Night Passages", Elie Wiesel wants to share his experience in concentration camps with readers. The reader is alerted early on that the author is undernourished and overworked and that a selection is about to be presented.
Even if they regularly execute thousands of people in crematories, hanging a child is an act of abhorrent brutality. All of the captives are in tears, and Eliezer believes that the Nazis have killed God himself: "I overheard the same man asking, "Where is God now?" behind me. Then I heard a voice inside of me respond, "Where is He?" He is present, hanging on this gallows." Eliezer's faith in God is dangerously near to being destroyed by the Nazis' decision to murder the child. According to Wiesel, the soup that night had a taste of corpses. Eliezer feels like death is all around him after seeing the execution, and he is unable to enjoy his soup because all goodness has been destroyed.

Leap Year
In ancient Rome, Julius Caesar established the 365-day calendar to match the changing seasons created by the Earth's movement around the sun. Caesar recognized a problem, though: the Earth actually takes 365¼ days to circle the sun. The extra one-quarter day would gradually shift the calendar away from the seasons. Caesar's solution was to add an extra day every four years, in what are now called leap years. Caesar's math wasn't quite right, though. His approach added too many days. So, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII improved on Caesar's work. He proposed that century years should not be leap years unless they can be evenly divided by four hundred. Thus, 1600 would be a leap year, while 1700 would not. Pope Gregory's calendar, called the Gregorian calendar, is still in use today.
What is the main idea of the passage?

The leap year was created in ancient Rome to keep the calendar aligned with the Earth's movements and was later modified by Pope Gregory XIII
