Onions have been around for a long time. In fact, scientists agree that onions were likely a staple in the prehistoric diet.
Onions are known to have existed in Egypt in 3500 BC. To the ancient Egyptians, onions symbolized eternity, and many pharaohs were buried alongside onions.
The ancient Greeks also believed in the power of onions. In fact, in the first century AD, a Greek physician convinced several Greek athletes that onions had a medicinal property that would make them stronger. As a result, the majority of athletes who participated in the first Olympic Games ate several pounds of onions, drank onion juice, and rubbed onions over their bodies.
In the Middle Ages, onions were prescribed to alleviate headaches and to prevent hair loss. They were also acceptable forms of payment for goods and services. They were even commonly given as wedding gifts!
Today, onions are primarily used to add flavor to our foods. Furthermore,all evidence indicates that they will continue to exist far into the future.

1 Have you ever heard of Old Stormalong, the greatest sailor of all time? He was so strong that he could win an arm wrestling contest with an octopus with one arm tied behind his back. 3 When he was 18, Stormalong decided to become a sailor and set off for the nearest seaport. The captain saw him coming from two states away and signed him up before he even arrived. Though some in the crew were doubtful about his lack of experience, Stormalong promptly proved his worth.



4 Before the Panama Canal was built, ships traveling between the Atlantic and the Pacific had to sail around the tip of South America. On his very first voyage, Stormalong had lookout duty. He spotted a huge storm near the Falkland Islands. Going through the storm would mean certain disaster for the ship. However, the first mate refused to tell the captain, who was asleep in his cabin. “You can’t see the Falklands from here,” he scoffed. “Get back to your post.”



5 What could Stormalong do? Disobeying orders was a serious offense. He’d likely be severely punished. Even worse, he’d probably never get hired on a ship again. If he did obey the order, his shipmates might perish. Stormalong made his decision. He jumped overboard, picked up the vessel, hoisted it over Panama, and dropped it into the Pacific. The splash woke the captain. He was not angry at all about Stormalong taking matters into his own hands. In fact, he fired the first mate and offered Stormalong the job. (He also began promoting the idea of a canal across Panama.) Saving that ship made Stormalong an instant legend!

Tom lay thinking. Presently it occurred to him that he wished he was sick; then he could stay home from school. Here was a vague possibility. He canvassed his system. No ailment was found, and he investigated again. This time he thought he could detect colicky symptoms, and he began to encourage them with considerable hope. But they soon grew feeble, and presently died wholly away. He reflected further. Suddenly he discovered something. One of his upper front teeth was loose. This was lucky; he was about to begin to groan, as a "starter," as he called it, when it occurred to him that if he came into court with that argument, his aunt would pull it out, and that would hurt. So he thought he would hold the tooth in reserve for the present, and seek further. Nothing offered for some little time, and then he remembered hearing the doctor tell about a certain thing that laid up a patient for two or three weeks and threatened to make him lose a finger. So the boy eagerly drew his sore toe from under the sheet and held it up for inspection. But now he did not know the necessary symptoms. However, it seemed well worth while to chance it, so he fell to groaning with considerable spirit.
But Sid slept on unconscious.
Tom groaned louder, and fancied that he began to feel pain in the toe.

In this story, the narrator transports back to the time of King Arthur, bringing with him his 19th-century knowledge of science. The king is holding him captive just as a solar eclipse occurs. He uses the king's fear and lack of knowledge to plot his escape.
