Skara Brae is one of the oldest historical sites in Europe, and it stayed hidden for more than 4,000 years. The ancient village of Skara Brae was discovered on the main island of Orkney, in Scotland. A massive storm in 1850 removed the sand that had covered it for thousands of years, exposing the remains of a small village.


Skara Brae is a collection of eight round, stone houses that still have their stone furnishings and even some of the belongings of the inhabitants. The contents can tell us a great deal about how people lived in what is called the Neolithic era, or the last period of the Stone Age. Seven of the eight houses appear to have been family homes, with beds, dressers, fireplaces, and even simple toilets. The eighth house may have been a community workshop. It shows evidence of tool-making and the use of a large fire pit.


How was Skara Brae built, and what, eventually, happened to it? Let's journey back in time through the evidence archaeologists have put together to understand the story of Skara Brae.


The small, stone village was built some time around 3100 BCE. The first villagers dug down into an existing midden heap, or trash heap, to build the foundations of their homes. The garbage helped to insulate and protect the homes. They built their round huts with stones found locally, sticking each piece together with a paste made from ground-up waste and dung.


After the houses were built, the villagers furnished their homes with stone beds, one on each side of the door, a stone dresser, and a fireplace, or hearth. The hearth kept the home warm and allowed the inhabitants to cook their food.


The people of Skara Brae then farmed the surrounding lands, with evidence suggesting that they grew barley and other grains. They kept cows and pigs, and they fished in the ocean for a good part of their diet.


As the number of people grew, the village expanded. Covered tunnels and alleyways were built to connect all the homes. This would have protected people traveling from one house to another from cold winter weather. Because of the connections between the houses and the shared workspace, archaeologists believe that Skara Brae was a close-knit community.


The people made many things, including pottery, stone tools, and bone jewelry. Curiously, no evidence of weaponry was ever found, leading archaeologists to believe that Skara Brae was a peaceful place.


Skara Brae was inhabited for approximately six hundred years, at which point, it was abandoned. Many theories exist about what happened to the people of Skara Brae. One of the most popular theories is that a terrible storm, similar to the one that would uncover the remains of the village in 1850, struck and drove the people from their homes. This is supported by the fact that so many possessions, including valuables like jewelry, were left behind.

“How can something that old be right here in Illinois?” Rob asked himself. He had been using the Internet to research lost civilizations for a history project. Rob found a place called Cahokia.




He was amazed to find that Cahokia was about two hours from his home! Between 20,000 to 40,000 people once lived there and built 120 mounds, yet researchers disagree about the purpose of the mounds. The Cahokia people disappeared and left behind no written records.




Rob read that long ago Cahokia covered 4,000 acres and was the largest city north of Mexico. Living there were farmers, hunters, craftsmen, traders, and priests. Most researchers think that the city was settled before the year 1000. What really surprised Rob was that everyone abandoned the city about 300 years later, about 100 years before Columbus or any other Europeans arrived in North America.




“Why would people build a big city and then abandon it?” Rob wondered. He was excited to tell his parents about what he had learned. They had heard about Cahokia but hadn’t been there. His mom suggested that they visit it the following weekend.




On Saturday morning, they stopped at the Visitor Center. A model of the ancient city showed the mounds and hundreds of homes. Next, Rob wanted to explore the huge Monks Mound, which was ten stories high. Rob wondered how many trips it took to haul enough dirt to make a mound that big.


Several flights of steps are built into the dirt mound.


The family climbed 156 steps to the top of the mound. The view was astounding. It was more amazing than Rob had expected.




“I can see parts of a wooden wall around the city,” Rob said. “Maybe the people who lived here were attacked and killed by their enemies.”




“Maybe,” his mom agreed. “The ruler of Cahokia probably lived on this mound.”




“But no one knows for sure that this ruler existed,” Rob said. “Why didn’t the Cahokia people leave behind any records?”

When we think about the pollution of our oceans, many of us think of oil spills that dirty the waters and harm a variety of ocean life. Or, we might think of people in boats who litter the waters with their trash. After all, how many times in the news do we hear about ships that leak dangerous chemicals into the water? What we may not realize, though, is that there is another danger that is just as harmful to ocean life as any chemical or other dangerous material: ocean noise.

Many of us think of the oceans as silent places. On the contrary, they are filled with a variety of sounds. On any given day, one might hear the calls of dolphins as they swim through the waters. Whales use sounds to keep track of each other. Sea lions talk to each other to find food. Even the tiniest of shrimp make a snapping sound. There are also sounds caused by wind or rain upon the waters. Sound also plays an important role in the daily life of various ocean animals, many of which depend upon their sharp sound detection skills to survive. With increased activities by people on many of the oceans’ waters, the noise has increased so much that it is beginning to cause damage to the oceans as well as to the animals that live in them.

Ocean noise is the term used to describe the human-made noise occurring at increasing rates in the ocean. The noise comes from many different sources: large ships, small boats with motors, and jet skis, among others. There are also underwater exploration activities such as mining, as well as radar activities of ships. One of the most harmful types of ocean noise occurs with offshore oil drilling and seismic oil explorations. Air guns are instruments that are used to determine the location of oil and natural gas beneath the sea floor. They make a sound that can damage the hearing of ocean animals.

We know that sound travels faster in water than it does in air. This means that sounds in the oceans can travel for many, many miles in a short period of time. Unfortunately, sounds made by people are much louder than sounds made by ocean animals.

What this means is that sounds caused by noisy engines or radar equipment used by ships can upset the everyday activities of the creatures that live in the ocean. For instance, humpback whales use songs to talk to each other. Scientists have discovered that the whales’ system of “talking” can be disturbed by loud noises. This makes it harder for the whales to find each other. The stranding of whales and dolphins has been found to increase immediately after naval sonar maneuvers. Sea lions are another type of animal that depends on sounds to communicate with other sea lions. Ocean noise can make it difficult for them to find food. Ocean noise can disturb migration routes of whales and other animals that travel to different places.

However, scientists and other researchers are working hard to find a solution to this threat to marine life. Since 2003, the use of low-frequency active (LFA) sonar equipment by the United States Navy has been tightly limited because its effects have been shown to cause harm to many ocean animals. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released a plan to reduce ocean noise that will work better than past attempts to reduce the noise.

Other people are helping as well. Some fishing companies use special equipment that makes a “pinging” sound to keep certain kinds of ocean life from getting caught in its fishing nets. The National Park Service completed a study that tracked tour cruise ships and made an effort to reduce the number of tours. They also tried to increase the “quiet time” for humpback whales by scheduling tours farther apart.

Local conservation groups are also asking people to be more careful about using jet skis, motorboats, and other equipment that might disturb areas where ocean life is particularly fragile. Also, closer attention is being paid to where ships are traveling to make sure that, whenever possible, they stay away from waters where large numbers of ocean animals live.

With the increase in ocean noise, measures must be taken to control or, at the very least, curb its growth.
