2 A study, published in the September 2012 issue of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, looked at the mineral density of specific bones as well as the entire skeleton of astronauts who used a new, stronger "weight lifting" machine. Of course, weights don't really "weigh" anything on the space station but resistance machines allow astronauts to get the same kind of workout. The Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED), installed in 2008, doubles the maximum simulated weight to as much as 600 pounds.
3 Researchers compared measurements from 2006 until 2008, when astronauts used a less capable workout machine. They found that astronauts using the advanced system came home with more lean muscle and less fat, and kept more of their whole body and regional bone mineral density. Those same astronauts also consumed sufficient calories and vitamin D, among other nutrients. These factors are known to support bone health and likely played a contributing role.
4 "After 51 years of human spaceflight, these data mark the first significant progress in protecting bone through diet and exercise," said Dr. Scott M. Smith, NASA nutritionist at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston and lead author of the publication.

7 "The increase in both bone breakdown and formation suggests that the bone is being remodeled, but a key question remains as to whether this remodeled bone is as strong as the bone before flight," said Dr. Jean Sibonga, NASA bone discipline lead at Johnson and coauthor of the study.
8 Bone density loss in astronauts on long-duration missions has been a major medical concern. In the past, astronauts have lost an average of 1 to 2 percent per month. By comparison, an elderly person loses about 1 to 2 percent per year.
9 This study shows that, through proper exercise and nutrition, crew members on long journeys in space can return to Earth with much less loss of bone mineral density. But a key question remains as to whether the bones are as strong as when the astronaut launched into space. It is only in recent times that China has become the world's largest gold producer. New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Australia had gold tucked away in their lands, but the original inhabitants had little time for digging or processing this yellow metal. That changed dramatically in the mid-19th century. By this time, Europeans had arrived, and they were keen to find gold.
5 In Papua New Guinea, traces of gold were found in pottery in the 1850s. But, it was not until 1888 that gold was reported on the country's Sudest Island. The modest rush that followed attracted around 400 miners. This number, however, pales in comparison with other 19th-century gold discoveries around the Pacific. Still, we must not overlook Papua New Guinea simply because of its humble beginnings. In recent years, it has ranked as the world's 13th largest gold producer.
'Instant' Towns
6 The major gold rushes in the Pacific area started in 1848, when gold was reported in California. Towns grew up almost overnight. Initially, they were a scatter of canvas tents linked by rough, muddy tracks. Few lasted beyond the local gold rushes. San Francisco, however, is a notable exception. It turned from a small settlement into a major city within just a few years.
7 In many newly discovered goldfields, market gardens were developed along fertile river valleys, and wagons would cart supplies to the goldfields from the port towns. Those who discarded their picks and shovels and opened shops or businesses that took wagonloads of supplies to the waiting miners often profited more than those who remained in the field.
8 Such experiences were not specific to the Pacific Northwest. Similar tales are told far across the Pacific. In 1851, gold was first discovered in the Australian state of New South Wales. A few months later, it was discovered further south in Victoria. The result was another rush of gold-hungry hopefuls.

Experienced miners, some from the goldfields in the United States and Canada, and "new chums" were soon risking their lives along the rivers of the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island.
