The government should own and run the telegraph and telephone in the best interests of the people since they are essential for the conveyance of news and, like the post office system, are a necessity.
6) Land ownership by foreigners should be outlawed since the land, along with all of nature's resources, belongs to the people and should not be monopolized for financial gain. The government should seize and hold for actual settlers alone all land that railroads and other businesses currently control in excess of their actual needs.
Urban workers in the Midwest and Northeast who supported the party largely did not vote for them. The party proceeded to field candidates for state and federal offices throughout the course of the following four years, establishing strong organizations in a number of Southern and Western states. The collapse of 1896 left the Populist movement never fully recovered, and the party's national unification with the Democrats was disastrous. Before the end of the 1890s, the Populist and Democratic Parties in the Midwest essentially united.
