Greeks created the Parthenon sculptures in Greece to honour Greek greatness. They stand in for the diverse cultural identities of millions of individuals. The Elgin Marbles are a group of statues and other items that were taken from the Parthenon (and other religious and ceremonial buildings built on the Acropolis of Athens) by agents of Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, during the Ottoman occupation of Greece and transferred to Britain. Because there is nowhere in Greece to store them and the Greek government is unable to maintain them, the British Museum contends that the sculptures in its collection should stay in London.
