Onions have been around for a long time. In fact, scientists agree that onions were likely a staple in the prehistoric diet.

Onions are known to have existed in Egypt in 3500 BC. To the ancient Egyptians, onions symbolized eternity, and many pharaohs were buried alongside onions.

The ancient Greeks also believed in the power of onions. In fact, in the first century AD, a Greek physician convinced several Greek athletes that onions had a medicinal property that would make them stronger. As a result, the majority of athletes who participated in the first Olympic Games ate several pounds of onions, drank onion juice, and rubbed onions over their bodies.

In the Middle Ages, onions were prescribed to alleviate headaches and to prevent hair loss. They were also acceptable forms of payment for goods and services. They were even commonly given as wedding gifts!

Today, onions are primarily used to add flavor to our foods. Furthermore,all evidence indicates that they will continue to exist far into the future.

If you're ever sitting in an Italian restaurant and notice a very tall, lean, young man gorging on spaghetti and chicken parmesan, you could be watching an Olympic champion and not even know it. Eating Italian food is one way that swimmer Tom Dolan gears up for a big race—along with making sure his inhaler is full. Tom has a case of asthma that might prevent some people from walking down the street, but he has won two gold medals and has broken a world record.

Tom Dolan started swimming at age five, simply to prove that he could out-swim his older sister. He has always been highly competitive; when he was a child, his dad could always get him to drink an extra glass of milk by filling two glasses and challenging Tom to a race. At the age of eleven, he broke his arm and his mother told him to stop swimming until the cast was off. Instead, Tom covered the cast with a foam casing and kept on swimming.

When Tom was twelve, he was running on the playground and suddenly felt like he could not breathe. He did not tell his parents until it happened a second time. They took him straight to the doctor, who diagnosed him with allergies and asthma. Tom was allergic to dust, mold, and pollen. Worst of all for a swimmer, he was sensitive to chlorine!

Tom's asthma did not stop him from becoming a competitive swimmer in college though, nor did the fact that he was also diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma. This meant that his asthma would get worse as he worked out more intensely. Another doctor said he also had a condition called tracheal stenosis, a narrow windpipe. Due to the tracheal stenosis and asthma, Tom could only take in about 10% as much oxygen as his competitors.

Despite his medical conditions, Tom continued to swim. His best event was the 400–meter Individual Medley (IM), which consists of 100 meters each of four different strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. Sometimes Tom blacked out during practice, but never during a race. Even a collapse and subsequent hospitalization in Hawaii during his sophomore year in college did not stop Tom. He had his eye on the Olympics.

The Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 presented Tom with a special challenge. The heat and humidity created sticky, heavy air that made it more difficult than usual for him to breathe. Going into the last 50 meters of the 400–meter IM, Tom was 3/100ths of a second behind his toughest competition, Eric Namesnik, another American swimmer. Tom pushed himself to the limit, beating Eric by 35/100ths of a second and setting a world record for the event. He went on to win his second gold medal in the same event in Sydney in 2000.

Tom believes that he is a great swimmer because of, not in spite of, his medical problems. He feels that his asthma taught him how to overcome adversity. As he says, he feels like he is one step ahead, because "I know that my body has gone through more stress and strain than anyone else in the pool." And, quite possibly, more Italian food.

A Good Day for a Bad Decision

Have you ever noticed that some people always seem to make the right choices? They may be the person who always picks the right pitch to swing at or the one who always picks the pair of shoes that quickly become a popular fad. On the other hand, some people never seem to make a good decision. They may be the kids who ride a bike down a steep hill and crash into a bush or the ones who step to the edge of a sidewalk in time to get splashed by a car. How do some always seem to be living the good life while others seem doomed to misery? Is this just a matter of luck?

While luck probably has something to do with it, the better explanation may be that the two groups have differences in the development of their brains. You see, most adult humans use their cerebral cortex to make decisions. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain in the front of your head that deals with how you perceive the world and respond appropriately. It also helps you control your impulses. This part of the brain is still growing and developing connections well into your adult years. So for young adults and teenagers, the decision-making center of the brain is not completely formed yet.

At the same time, the teenage brain is also experiencing growth in another part of the brain—the amygdala (a-mig-dala). This part of the brain is responsible for emotions. Specifically, the amygdala talks to other parts of the brain about events related to rewards and fear.

In essence, our emotional brains are having growing spurts and our impulses are out of control at the same time our cerebral cortexes are not finished growing. We simply don't have the tools to control those emotions and impulses. As a result, teenagers feel overly emotional and wishy-washy when it comes to decisions. This development cycle is one reason society doesn't consider children to be adults until after they are 18. Biologically, the teenage brain is not generally ready for adult decisions.

So the differences between those who seem to make good decisions and those who seem to make bad ones may be fewer than you think. In fact, if you study the people you think make only good decisions, you will likely find they also make some catastrophically bad ones as well. A person's ability to make a good decision increases with age and experience though we all develop at different rates. While you are young, you may want to take advantage of those around you with bigger cerebral cortexes: adults. Their advice may be just what is needed to counter your amygdala.

The federal civil rights complaint filed last July claimed the student faced racial discrimination at her public middle school when she was disciplined for having “subtle streaks of purple running through her braided hair.”
The suit also accused APS of a history of bias against Black students when it comes to disciplinary measures. In 2019, a 13-year-old Black student was disciplined at school for having streaks of purple in her hair. Staff at Cleveland Middle School say it was distracting and a violation of the dress code. Elizabeth Roland, the mother of the Cleveland Middle School student, took APS to court for race-based discrimination and negligent supervision. According to court documents, other non-Black students had streaks of color in their hair but were not disciplined. The state of New Mexico and the City of Albuquerque signed into law prohibiting discrimination based on race-based hairstyles.
The Crown Act ensures statutory protection for hair texture and styles such as headdresses, braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools. Making this in-school suspension illegal. “I can’t speak for APS but I can speak for the city of Albuquerque and the community in saying that the fact that these issues continue to happen reminds us that education is necessary regarding the history and the backdrop of these actions,” said Torri Jacobus, managing assistant city attorney.
