Check Your Understanding
Imagine that you are editing a classmate's writing and you notice this sentence:
Intelligence, strength, and good looks, qualities that Harrison Bergeron possesses, is just what the government is trying to control.

In your own words, write an explanation so that your classmate understands how to correct the sentence.

Answers

Answer: Intelligence, strength, and good looks are all qualities that Harrison Bergeron possesses, which is just what the government is trying to control

Explanation: The last section, "is just what the government is trying to control", doesn't need the word "just" in the sentence. I also changed it a little bit because I feel that it is more proficient that way.

Squatting underneath the tiers of benches, next to Christopher, I waited in anticipation. Although my body trembled and I was scared, excitement zipped through me. The impatient crowd carelessly threw bright, red flowers from their seats and the red petaled confetti showered down upon us. As loud as the biggest drum in the circus, the sound of Carlo Harris’ booming voice filled the tent as he excitedly said, “Roll up! Roll up! It’s the best show you’ve ever seen! We’ve got many one of a kind acts!”. I knew this was where I belonged. Suddenly, a hush descended over the tent and I felt the crowd collectively hold their breath. Dan Clark rushed out into the ring and flying around the ring like a bird. Beside me, I felt the breeze of cool air as the horses rushed into the ring. They were the most beautiful, amazing creatures I had ever seen? Suddenly, I felt all my nerves and anxiety fade away. Out of nowhere another horse trotted in. Then another soon after. However, something was not right. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck spike and everything seemed to slow down. Worried that something horrible was about to occur, I peered past the entrance flap of the tent where I could see someone. Someone from a distant life, looming in the glow of a lantern. Some I thought I’d never see again.... lex.

Your parents might bring up the point that having a phone would lead you to being on it too much and disconnect you from the social world. To argue this, you could say that they could set a screen time on your phone that allows you to be on it for a limited amount of time. Another argument your parents could bring up is that it's very easy to be exposed to negative content, such as bullying, violent images or videos, etc. You can counter this by saying that they could monitor what you are looking at on your phone. Lastly, your parents could say that the phone could be a distraction to you during class or other important times. This could be fixed by simply putting the phone on silent, or leaving it at home all together.

SHARKS' TEETH

Langston Carter

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Answer: It is important to help others.
The answer probably seems like it’s “it is to help women” but it’s not necessarily that, the man says “it’s the least I can do for a fellow citizen” maybe if the man said something like “it’s the least I can do for a lady like you” it would be that answer but no, the other answers aren’t even close to being correct either.
The answer is C-it is important to help others

Explanation: In both passages it talks about war.

In the first one, when it says "' I've just come from the Richmond camp with news about the revolutionaries...'" This is a clear statement about the revolitionary war, and further on it goes to say, "'Lieutenant Hamlin's horse came up lame, and he was unable to deliver himself.'" This is talking about something bad that happened durring the war.

In the second passage, it says, "Her village needed every able-bodied person to help defend against the Manchu." This person is obvisouly in a position of defense and how this girl is going to protect her village as her brother. Usually when protecting something, it's in a fight. Also, she said she "flinched" when she cut her first chunk of hair off, meaning it was causing her distress and wasn't easy.
